Split people into paths and test versions
Send different people down different paths with a Split, or share people by percentage with an A/B split.
Where it is in the app
Open Home, choose Email & SMS, then Flows.
- Home
- Email & SMS
- Flows
Two steps in the flow editor send people in different directions. Split decides by what you know about each person. A/B split decides by chance, so you can compare two versions.
Both live under Logic in the Actions panel. Drag one onto a line. Each branch gets its own line below the step, and you add steps to each line as usual.
#Split: paths with conditions
A Split works through its paths from the top. Each person takes the first path whose questions all fit. Anyone left over takes Everyone else.
Drag Split onto a line. It has up to 20 paths.
In each path, type a name in the box at the top. The name appears on the canvas and in reports.
Under They take this path when ALL of these fit, press + add a question.
Choose what to check from the list (see below).
To add more paths, press + add a path. The ↑ and ↓ buttons reorder them. Order matters because the first match wins. × removes a path (a split keeps at least one).
Everyone else is always there and cannot be removed. It catches anyone who fits none of your paths, including a person whose order arrived without the field a path asks about.
A path takes up to ten questions, and a person must fit all of them. For "this or that", make two paths.
#The questions you can ask
- They still have NOT done something. Pick What they did, such as an order. This is the usual check in a cart flow: still no order since they joined.
- They HAVE done something since joining. The same picker.
- Something about what started this flow. Reads one field from what your shop sent, like an order total or a product name.
- They are on a list. Pick Which list. Tick Match people who are NOT on it to flip it.
- A field on the contact. Type a field name and a value.
For the first two, Only count it when narrows the event. A zero-dollar replacement order is not someone coming back, so narrow an order check with a total that is over 0.
Comparisons are is, is not, is over, is at least, is under, is at most, includes, does not include, is present and is missing.
#A/B split: share people by percentage
An A/B split sends each person down one branch, chosen by chance in the shares you set.
Drag A/B split onto a line. It starts with two shares, A and B, at 50 each.
Give each share a name and a percent.
The counter on the panel shows the total, for example 100% of 100. The shares must add up to exactly 100. Anything less and that percentage of people silently get nothing.
Press + add a share for a third version, or × to remove one. A split keeps at least two.
A person always lands on the same side. If the step runs again for them, they get the same version.
#Read the result
Put a different email step on each branch, then open the flow's report (see "Read a flow report and see who was held back"). The Steps table lists every email step with its own Sent, Delivered, Opened, Clicked, Orders and Revenue. Compare the two rows. On the Flows list, a flow with a split shows a split icon in the Type column.
#If it didn't work
- The flow will not save. A split with shares that do not total 100, or a path with no questions, blocks saving. The bar at the top says which.
- Everyone takes Everyone else. The questions in the paths above do not fit anyone. Check the field names and values, and whether your shop sends that field.
- A path never gets anyone. An earlier path catches them first. Move the narrower path up with ↑.
- You deleted a split and were asked a question. The editor asks Which way should everybody go instead? Pick the branch to keep. The others, and any step only they led to, are removed.
