Shopify Payments and peptide stores: what the terms say

Shopify Payments switched off, or never approved? You are not stuck. Shopify the store and Shopify Payments the processor are two different things with two different rule books. This page quotes both, with dates and links, and explains how to keep your Shopify store while taking cards another way.

By the Amino Engine team. Updated 8 October 2026.

The short answer

Shopify Payments has its own terms of service, separate from Shopify's rules for stores. Those terms split businesses into two groups:

“Certain categories of businesses and business practices are prohibited from using the Payments Services ("Prohibited Businesses"), or require additional review and approval by us to use the Payments Services ("Restricted Businesses").”

The important part comes next. Shopify does not write those lists itself. They come from the processor behind Shopify Payments in your country:

“The types of business categories and business practices that are considered Prohibited Businesses or Restricted Businesses are provided by each Payment Processor in your Designated Country and can be located at the links found in the Payment Processor List.”

So whether a peptide store can use Shopify Payments is decided by that processor's list and review, not by Shopify alone. The terms point to a Payment Processor List for the link that applies to your country. Read that list for your country before you rely on Shopify Payments.

Shopify's store rules are a separate document, and its acceptable use policy does not name peptides. Its basic rule is:

“You can’t use Shopify to do anything that’s illegal where you do business.”

You will find pages online saying Shopify explicitly bans peptides. The acceptable use policy does not say that. What is true is that losing Shopify Payments can happen even when the store itself is allowed.

What happens to money held by Shopify Payments

Like most processors, Shopify Payments can hold back funds. Its terms give it wide room to set a reserve:

“We, in our discretion, will set the terms of any Reserve Account and notify you of such terms, which may require that a certain amount (including the full amount) of the funds received for a Transaction are held for a period of time, or that additional amounts are held in the Reserve Account.”

Note the words "including the full amount". If Shopify Payments sets a reserve on your account, the notice it sends is what tells you the terms. Ask in writing for the release date if it is not stated. Save your payout and order records while you have access, and keep cash aside for refunds and disputes on past orders. Our page on frozen funds on a peptide store has the full list of steps.

Your store and your payments are separate

Losing Shopify Payments does not mean losing your store. Shopify lets stores take payment through providers other than Shopify Payments. Your theme, products, customers and orders stay where they are. Only the card processing moves.

The store-level side is a different question: what Shopify itself allows you to list and sell. We cover that in why Shopify keeps banning peptide brands.

One thing not to do: do not open a new Shopify Payments account, or describe your store differently, to get around the review. It tends to make every later application harder.

Taking cards on Shopify with Amino Engine

Amino Engine is the merchant processor for peptide brands. We put a card checkout on your own Shopify store, so your buyers pay with Visa, Mastercard, Discover or Amex without leaving your site.

  • Everyone can apply. No processing history required.
  • Stores closed or frozen by Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal or Square are welcome. Tell us what happened in your application.
  • We review your store and documents once, before your first payment. If something needs fixing, we tell you exactly what.
  • We set the checkout up with you after approval.
  • Your rate is quoted with your approval. Any setup fee, payout timing, any reserve and what a dispute costs are in writing before your first payment.

Before you apply, check the store against our site rules: research-use-only notices on product pages and at checkout, no health claims, and clear shipping and refund policies that a buyer can find.

Questions to ask before you switch processors

Whoever you move to, get clear answers to these first. A provider that will not answer them in writing is a risk on its own.

  1. Do you accept research-use peptide stores today, and will you say so in writing?
  2. Does your checkout run on my own Shopify store?
  3. When do you review my store: before my first payment, or after I already have sales?
  4. What is my rate, is there a setup fee, when are payouts, is any reserve held, and what does a dispute cost?
  5. Who do I contact when something goes wrong, and how?

At Amino Engine: yes; yes, on your own Shopify store; once, before your first payment; all of it in writing before you take a card; and us, by email at support@aminoengine.com.

What we check on a Shopify store

The review looks at your store the way a careful buyer would. These are the things that block an approval when they are missing:

  • Research-use-only notices on product pages and at checkout.
  • No health claims in product descriptions, images or the blog.
  • A shipping policy and a refund policy linked from the footer.
  • Contact details a buyer can find.
  • Products on the store that match the ones on your application.
  • Company documents, an owner ID and a business bank account.

If something needs fixing, we tell you exactly what. Your history with Shopify Payments is not what decides it.

Moving to WooCommerce instead

Some peptide brands move to WooCommerce so the store itself is on software they control. WooCommerce's own document on regulated products says the plugin is not limited:

“Yes. WooCommerce is open-source software, and we do not limit how it is used.”

Source: WooCommerce, highly regulated products, checked 8 October 2026.

The same document lists services highly regulated stores cannot use, and WooPayments is one of them. So a WooCommerce store still needs a processor that accepts the category. Read how to accept credit cards on a WooCommerce peptide store before you decide. Amino Engine works on both, so you do not have to move to get cards back.
