Moving from Klaviyo or Brevo: a step by step guide

Before you start: what moves and what does not

Three things move by CSV file: your contacts, the custom properties on them, and your suppression list. The suppression list is the people you must not email: unsubscribes, bounces and spam complaints. It matters as much as the contacts.

Flows do not move as files. Klaviyo's own guide to migrating off Klaviyo covers contacts, suppressions, templates and analytics. Flows are not on that list, so plan to rebuild them. Klaviyo lets you export a template as HTML, which is useful as a reference while you rebuild.

Before you export anything, write down:

• Every flow you have live, and what triggers it.
• Any scheduled campaigns.
• Where your signup forms sit on your site.

Export from Klaviyo

Klaviyo explains this in how to export a list or segment to a CSV file. In short:

1. Go to Audience, then Lists & segments.
2. Click into the list or segment you want.
3. Open the Manage list (or Manage segment) menu and choose Export to CSV.
4. Choose all properties, or only the ones you want. Include the consent details, because they carry the opt-in dates.

For the suppression list, Klaviyo's migration guide says to go to Audience, then Profiles, click Suppressed Profiles in the upper right corner, and click Export CSV. Only Owner, Admin and Analyst roles can export. Finished files wait under Settings, Other, Downloads for 30 days.

Export from Brevo

Brevo explains this in export your contacts from Brevo. In short:

1. Go to CRM, then Contacts.
2. To export everyone, load no list and apply no filter. To export one list or segment, click Load a list or segment.
3. Select all contacts, then click More actions, then Export.
4. Pick the attributes you want. Open the Subscriptions section and include the subscription status.
5. Choose comma as the separator, then Start export.

To get the people you must not email, Brevo's page on blocklisted contacts shows the filter: Add filter, then Email, then Email campaigns subscriptions, then Blocklisted. Export that view as a separate file.

Import into Amino Engine

Go to Contacts, then Import, and bring three files: your subscribers, your unsubscribes and your suppressions. The only column you need is one called email. First name, last name, phone and consent columns are recognised, and everything else comes along as an attribute you can build segments on. Each file can hold up to 20,000 rows. Split bigger lists. Anyone in two files is merged.

Then the importer asks one question: where did these people come from? If they said yes, you point it at the column that holds the opt-in date. Rows with a date can be mailed. Rows without one are held back and never mailed until that person ticks a box, fills in a form, or you upload proof. There is no button that marks everyone as consented, on purpose.

We refuse lists with no consent history behind them. Bought, rented or scraped lists are not accepted. People who never asked report you as spam, and a lost sending reputation takes months to rebuild. Unsubscribes stay unsubscribed. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide requires you to honour opt-outs within 10 business days, and importing your suppressions is how you keep honouring the ones you already have.

Prove your sending domain

Your email goes out from your own domain, usually a name like mail.yourbrand.com. To prove it, you add one DNS record with two values in whichever panel you bought the domain from. We check it every ten minutes, or straight away when you press Check now. Changes usually show within minutes, sometimes up to an hour.

Nothing sends until the domain is verified. You can still build campaigns, build flows, import your list and design emails while you wait.

Rebuild your flows

Start with the two that catch people closest to buying: abandoned checkout or abandoned cart, then a welcome series. Both are in the ready-made library. Each arrives switched off, so you can edit the emails before anything sends. Then add post-purchase, browse abandonment and win-back.

Warm-up: what 42 days means for your first campaigns

A new sender has to earn its volume. Inbox providers are wary of a domain that goes from zero to thousands of emails overnight. So every new sender is warmed up over 42 days, and your daily limit climbs as it goes.

In practice: send your first campaigns to your best people. The customers who bought last month teach Gmail that you are wanted. A list you have not mailed in years does the opposite. If you hit the daily limit mid-campaign, the rest goes out as the limit allows.

Switch off the old tool last

Turn off each old flow only after its replacement is live here. If both run at once, a shopper gets two cart reminders for one cart. Klaviyo recommends setting old flows to draft rather than deleting them, because deleted flows and their data cannot be recovered. Cancel scheduled campaigns, swap your signup forms for ours, and remove the old tracking code from your site.

Keep your final exports somewhere safe. Then cancel the old plan.
