Preview and send a test
See the email as a phone or desktop reader would, check every link, and send a copy to your team before the real send.
Where it is in the app
Open Home, choose Email & SMS, then Campaigns.
- Home
- Email & SMS
- Campaigns
Press Preview & test before every send. It opens a window with two tabs, Preview and Send a test. The button sits in the top bar of the Design and Review steps.
#Where to find it
Open Email & SMS, then Campaigns.
On screenEmail & SMS › CampaignsOpen a draft campaign.
Go to the Design or Review step.
Press Preview & test at the top right.
Text campaigns have no Preview & test button. They send a test from the Message step instead.
#Read the preview
The Preview tab loads the email and lists three lines at the top:
- From: the name and address it goes out under.
- Subject: your subject line.
- Preview: your preview text. If you have not written one, it reads "None — the inbox will show the first line of your email."
Under those lines:
Press Desktop or Phone to switch the width. Desktop is 600 pixels wide and Phone is 375.
Scroll the email. It is the real email, with merge tags filled in.
Read the table Every link in this email. The Text column is what the reader sees and Goes to is where it leads. An email with no links shows "No links yet."
We do not check that the pages still work. Click through the important links yourself.
#See it as a real person
The See it as a real person card is on the right of the Preview tab.
Type at least three letters of an email address or a name into Search by email or name.
Pick a contact from the results.
The email redraws with that person's name and details. A tag above the email reads "Showing" followed by their address and "values".
Press Back to the plain preview to return to the normal view.
#Send a test
Open the Send a test tab.
Tick the addresses to send to. Your own address shows "· you".
Press Send test.
You get a message that starts "Queued for" and lists your addresses. It ends "It goes out on the next delivery pass." A test is one copy of the real email. It does not touch your contacts.
#Who can receive a test
Tests only go to people on your team. This keeps your domain from being used to send to strangers. To add someone, add them under Settings → General → Users first.
To save a short list of test addresses:
Press Manage test addresses.
Type an address into the box and press Add. A brand can save up to five.
Press Remove next to any you want gone.
Press Save these addresses.
One test can go to at most six addresses. Addresses on the never-send list are refused.
#Why a test is refused
The footnote under the button says: "This is the same email, checked the same way. If a test is refused, the campaign would be refused too." So read a refusal as a warning about the real send.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Write a subject line first — a test send needs one. | Go back to the Message step. |
| This brand has no verified sending domain yet, so nothing can be sent — not even a test. | Verify your sending domain. |
| Not sent — template would not render correctly | The design failed a check. Fix what it lists. |
| Already sent in the last minute. Wait a moment before sending another. | Wait 60 seconds. |
| is not on this brand's team | Add the person under Settings → General → Users, or send it to yourself. |
#Look at a campaign after it was sent
For a campaign that already went out, open the ⋯ menu on its row in Campaigns and pick Preview what was sent. The page title says "What this campaign sent". It has a Desktop and Phone switch and a Back to the report button. Parts that change per person, such as the name and the unsubscribe link, still show as tags.
#If it didn't work
- A red note shows instead of the email. Read the reason in it. It names what is missing, such as a subject line or a design.
- No Preview & test button. You are on the Who or Message step. It only appears on Design and Review.
- The test never arrives. Check spam first. The message said "Queued", so it was accepted. It leaves on the next delivery pass, which can take a few minutes.
- A link in the table looks wrong. Fix it in Edit design, then open Preview & test again.
