The setup wizard, step by step

The seven screens you see after signing up, which one you cannot skip, and what each one asks for.

Where it is in the app

Everything starts on the Home screen, the first thing you see after you sign in.

  • Home

Right after you sign up you land in a full-screen setup wizard. It has seven screens and a progress bar across the top, labelled Account, Store, Sender, Domain, Goal, Flow and Plan.

Only the first screen holds the app shut. Screens 2, 3 and 4 have a Skip for now button, and what you skip waits for you on the Home checklist. Screens 5, 6 and 7 do not have a skip button, but each of them is one tap or one press. If you opened a screen from Home, the footer says Back to Home instead of Back.

If you close the tab, you pick up on the screen you left.

#1. Account: what do you sell, and where?

This is the compulsory screen. It asks:

  1. What you sell. Pick one tile, such as Peptides, Supplements & nootropics, CBD & hemp or Something else. If you pick Something else, a box asks you to Tell us what you sell.

  2. Where you sell. Pick WooCommerce, Shopify or No store yet. If you pick Shopify, a box asks for Your Shopify address, the one ending in .myshopify.com.

  3. Your name.

  4. Your business address: Street, Town or city, State or region (leave it empty if your country has none), Postcode or ZIP and Country.

The address is not optional. Every marketing email has to carry a postal address at the bottom by law. You can change it later under Settings → General → Account.

If you picked WooCommerce, the button at the bottom reads Connect my store, because the next screen sends you to your own WordPress.

#2. Store: connect your store

The screen is headed Connect your store. For WooCommerce, you type Your shop's web address and add our plugin. For Shopify, you approve us once inside Shopify. Both are covered in "Connect your store". Press Skip for now if you cannot do this today.

#3. Sender: where should your emails come from?

Three boxes:

  • The name people see, which sits above the subject line in every inbox.
  • Your sending domain. It has to be your own domain. Most brands use a subdomain such as mail.yourstore.com and leave their website alone.
  • The address they reply to.

#4. Domain: prove the domain is yours

The screen gives you one DNS record to add at whoever runs your website, with a copy box. We keep checking on our own, and the screen turns green when the record lands. DNS can take hours and often needs someone else, so Skip for now is expected here. "Set up your sending domain" has the full walk-through.

#5. Goal: what would you like to improve first?

Pick one of five:

  • Recover abandoned checkouts
  • Convert new subscribers
  • Increase repeat purchases
  • Win back inactive customers
  • Send a campaign

One option carries a most picked tag. Abandoned checkouts is the suggestion when your store really has open carts. Otherwise it is new subscribers. You can turn on any of the others later from Home.

#6. Flow: turn on your first flow

Press Build my flow. It takes a few seconds, and nothing is sent. Then you can press Send me a test first (the test goes to your own address and never counts against the trial), or Edit the emails ↗ to open the editor in a new tab. The footer button names what it will do and follows your goal: Turn on abandoned checkout flow, Turn on welcome flow, Turn on post-purchase flow or Turn on win-back flow. If you picked Send a campaign, the button reads Write my campaign and opens the campaign builder instead. Nothing sends to anyone until you press it.

#7. Plan: put a card on file

The screen shows the smallest plan, how many free days you have, and the date of the first charge. Press Add my card. You type the card on Stripe's own page and come straight back. Nothing is charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel before then under Settings → Billing. If we cannot take payments that day, the wizard lets you through and asks again before your free days run out.

#Coming back to it

The wizard is not the only door. Home keeps a checklist for whatever you skipped; see "The setup guide on Home".

#If it didn't work

  • You cannot get past screen 1. The button stays off until you have picked what you sell and where, and filled in your name and address. The sentence next to the button says which part is missing.
  • You landed back on the wizard after signing in. That is the wizard working. Finish screen 1 and you are through.
  • You do not have a store yet. Pick No store yet. You can connect one later from Home.
